From time to time we have older puppies or adult dogs available for adoption. In most cases, these individuals are puppies who have been returned to us, usually by no fault of their own. In rare cases, these older dogs are retired team members, who have earned the right to be a special family’s shining star.

Conditions
We have two types of older dogs that are adopted out through this program. The majority of them are what we call “boomerang” dogs, named so because we throw them out there and they come right back. Very rarely, an adult team member will be entering retirement and will be offered to an approved home.
Evaluation
When one of our pups comes back to us, we find out as much as we can about the time they were away from us. We track their medical records, training history, dietary information, and collect as much information as possible about their daily routine. We also assess personality and behavior upon arrival and take notes.
Rehabilitation
Sometimes our boomerang puppies need a little maintenance before they are ready for adoption. This may be in the form of medical diagnosis and treatment (ex: immuno-drops following an allergy blood test), exercise and training regiments, emotional decompression, etc. We take great care to assess what is needed and address exactly what brought the puppy back to us.
Adoption
After we are certain that our boomerang puppy is ready to find a new home, we make them available and pair them wisely with just the right family to ensure that another rehoming is unlikely. We ask that our older adoption clients keep in mind the rule of 3: It takes 3 days for a dog to decompress after rehoming, 3 weeks to begin to understand the schedule and the rules, and 3 months to truly feel at home.

Rehoming Rule of Three
– 3 Days to Decompress
-3 Weeks to Understand Rules/Schedule
-3 Months to Feel “At Home”

Consulting Science: Best Practices in Litter Frequency & Age of Dam in Canine Husbandry
I began my animal husbandry experience before I could truly understand what was happening. When I was sixteen I bought my first Doberman and, minus a few college years in apartments, I’ve…
